A Universe is a giant bottle gourd made of earth (cob and kaolin clay over a steel frame). You can enter at either of the two ends; inside, there are large feet, hands, and heads lining the walls, resembling a body turned outside in. When it rains, water streams into channels carved on its outside walls and down to the 16 windows (8 on each side), where there are cups that fill up, tip, spill, hit notes, and make music. CONSTELLATION invites youth from Beam Camp City to share their creativity in ways big and small. Each effort contributes to the making of shared experiences—bridging the mysteries of the cosmos with the wonders of human connection. How do we relate to the stars and NYC skyline? Where are we in the constellation of things? We are made up of relationships, just as a constellation is made up of stars in relation to every star.
Each of the 8 STARS that make up CONSTELLATION have a base (which takes the shape of giant human sense organs); stem (that is as tall as a small tree and); and web (of lines that bloom from each stem). Suspended on the webs are solar powered lights and painted slip-casted bells. The constellations ring and shine throughout the island in celebration of light, sound, and human connection.

"This series and the works’ respective titles form a poem whose limbs and lines have been separated. Without sequence, their positions are like shards of memory stewing in the mind, a frayed network marked by continual renewal and revision. The works’ supposed brokenness, offset by Zhu’s delicate application of tiny iridescent brushstrokes across the pictures’ surfaces, suggests an attitude of meditative healing and an understanding of painting’s role as a luminous throughline between the estranged."

Teaching Garden - in collaboration with teachers, staff, and students of each grade level at Andreas Hudde (I.S.240) in Brooklyn, we designed and facilitated the making of an outdoors classroom–garden. The students were asked to reflect on their personal growth and learning, using gardening as a metaphor for cultivating the world they want to live in. Their reflections in quotes, writings, drawings, paintings, sculptures, and adaptations dress the structures, turning the garden into a sculptural-classroom-garden. Fall 2017 - Spring 2018.
